A Kekaha girl, 16, remained in critical condition yesterday at The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu, after being thrown from the bed of a pickup truck Saturday night.
The nature of her injuries was not known Monday, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to Lt. Scott Yagihara of the Kauai Police Department’s Traffic Safety unit.
A 16-year-old male also thrown from the truck when the driver attempted a U-turn maneuver was treated and released from the West Kauai Medical Center at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, Yagihara said.
The girl was treated at the Waimea hospital, then transported via American Medical Response ambulance to PMRF, where she was transferred to the air ambulance for transport to Honolulu and Queen’s.
The KPD has opened a criminal negligent-injury investigation in connection with the incident, which took place late Saturday night, June 8, along a stretch of Kaumuali’i Highway west of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, around the 31-mile marker, Yagihara said.
According to police, the 15-year-old male driver of the truck is considered an unlicensed driver, because he had only a learner’s permit. The permit requires the young driver to drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver, Yagihara explained. He was not injured in the one-car mishap.
