The newly formed Rotary Club of Kalepa Sunrise recently added three well-known community leaders to its roster. According to club president Ray Paler, the club inducted Rebecca Sagum, Cathy Shanks and George Menor. “All three possess deep community service roots,” said Paler. “Their participation will greatly widen our connection to our Kaua’i community.”
Sagum is the Director of the Wilcox Health Foundation; the fundraising arm of Wilcox Hospital and Kaua’i medical Clinic. She came to that position four years ago after several years as director of Ho’ola Lahui Hawai’i, the native Hawaiian health program.
“I first came into contact with Rotary at the Hanalei Bay Rotary Club when I made a presentation there,” said Sagum. “They delighted me by asking how they could help. Subsequently, we have partnered with Po’ipu Beach Rotary to help patients needing specific treatment in Honolulu. I’m so proud now to be an active part of an organization of which I was previously a beneficiary.”
Shanks has been the director of the Kaua’i Division of the American Heart Association for nine years. “My job is to help people prevent heart disease and stroke,” she said. “Being a member of Rotary brings me even closer to our island community, so I feel more like I’m helping. Not to mention,” she adds, “the greater connection to the business community afforded by Rotary membership.”
Menor is known island-wide for his community involvement, most notably with Filipino organizations. He is currently chairman of the State Tax Review Board and a Director of the Kaua’i Filipino Chamber of Commerce. “I’m here to serve the people of Kaua’i,” he said, “and I’d like to enhance the partnership between Rotary and our Filipino community service organizations. It would strengthen all of us. It’s one of my goals.”
