Patricia Valentine has sold Ho’okaulike, a Kaua’i company that fits women with prosthetic breasts after mastectomies, to Lissa Lang, an oncology nurse and breast cancer patient educator.
Valentine, a mammography technician at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, sold the company after she decided to relocate to the Mainland.
Clients of Valentine have described her as an hardworking advocate for cancer patients who have lived through the loss of a breast following mastectomy, the result of cancer being discovered there.
Valentine said she offered what she was felt was a “necessary and fulfilling service,” and searched for the right person to take over her company, which was started last April.
Lang, a registered nurse who holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing as well as oncological cancer nurse designation, is also an educator for a breast cancer and cervical cancer program.
Lang is well known in the community and among physicians and peers because of her work with the American Cancer Society. Valentine said she and Lang share a common goal of placing patients above profits.
Insurance covers most, if not all, of the cost for the silicone foam and mastectomy bras, Valentine said. Lang is trained and prepared to file claims and do proper fittings.
