LIHUE – If jayvee acts as a forecast to the varsity, expect good things to come from the Waimea Menehune volleyball program in the next couple of years.
The Waimea Menehunes boys (4-1) and girls (5-0) jayvee teams each won the first round and opened the second round with convincing wins over the Kaua’i Red Raiders to further assert their commanding hold on the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation volleyball season.
Menehune boys
win 14-12, 15-9
The Waimea Menehune boys jayvee volleyball team slithered past the Kaua’i Red Raiders in the first game and cruised through the second to win 14-12, 15-9 at the Raiderdome in Lihue.
A Ryan Nagaoka kill and an ace and kill by Rikki Garma gave the Red Raiders an early 5-1 lead, but it wouldn’t last.
Bryan Hayashi would jumpstart the Menehune offense with an ace, and although the Raiders would respond with an assist to kill connection from Garma to Garrett Sakimae, a Joshua Cabral block and two Peterson DelaCruz aces gave the Menehunes a 9-7 lead.
While the game clock burned through long rallies, Waimea kept on rolling.
A Hayashi kill and Cabral ace put the Menehunes up 14-9, and although the Raiders would chip in with a Justin McScheehy block and Clesson Lee ace, the clock dwindled to zero, stifling their comeback attempt.
Waimea’s victory was more convincing in the second game.
A Hayashi ace, a double block by Cabral and Collin Morikawa and kills from Cabral and Hayashi gave the Menehunes an early 5-2 lead. Moments later, June Kaaumoana added a kill, Cabral chipped in another and Hayashi iced an ace as Waimea cruised to a 7-3 lead.
Two Garma kills and a double block from McSheehy and Ted Shibata helped climb the Red Raiders to within three points, but that was as close as they would come.
Chris Aguilar, Cabral, Hayashi and Timothy Mattos each had kills, Kaaumoana and Aguilar added blocks and Hayashi chipped in an ace to give the Menehunes a 15-9 victory.

over Raiders 15-2, 15-2
The Waimea Menehunes girls jayvee team make it look easier and easier as the season trudges along.
Undefeated in the first round, the Menehunes pounced on the Kaua’i Red Raiders 15-2, 15-2 to take a commanding stance in the opening game of the second round.
Chantelle Briones began the assault with two aces, Elysse Sato, Jessica Jacinto added kills and the Raiders had several hitting errors to give Waimea a commanding 7-1 lead.
Mallorie Hepa added two more kills and Sonya Tacub had an ace to give Waimea a 9-1 lead. Kaua’i’s Trisha Niau broke the momentum with a kill to give the Raiders a second point, but Waimea couldn’t be stopped.
Aces by Tacub, Jacinto and Tori Kagawa, a kill by Taira Kajiwara and blocks from Hepa and Jacinto closed out the first game 15-2.
The Menehunes had similar luck in game two.
The Raiders took a 2-0 lead on an Erin Fabro kill and Ligaya Maiones ace, but that was as far as they would get in terms of scoring.
The Menehunes charged with a 15-point run to saunter to its fifth consecutive win of the season.
In the second game, Tori Kagawa had four aces and an assist. Briones had a kill. Jacinto added three kills. Kerri-anne Iwai had one kill and Tacub chipped in one more to round out a slew of Menehune scoring.
