Huge winter waves kicked up again Friday, forcing the County of Kaua’i’s Ocean Safety Bureau to close beaches from Hanalei to Polihale.
Kalani Vierra, the county’s Ocean Safety Bureau Supervisor, is urging the public to exercise caution and stay out of the water in the closed areas.
“The wave faces bumped back up to forty feet,” said Vierra. “The high surf and stormy conditions are making the North and West shores very dangerous.”
The beach closures are scheduled to be re-evaluated early this morning. Earlier this week large waves closed North Shore beaches and on O’ahu forced the postponement of the Rip Curl Cup pro surfing contest where Hanalei surfer Andy Irons is expected to become the ASP world champion.
