KAPA’A Sophomore forward Kiah Imai hit a free throw with 6.8 seconds left to give the Kapa’a Warriors boys junior varsity squad a thrilling 39-38 come-from-behind victory over the Waimea Menehune Friday night at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium.
Kapa’a took its first lead of the contest at 37-36 with 1:31 left in the final quarter on Greg Ragsacs driving lay-up in traffic.
With less than a minute to go, Waimea guard Luke Tsuchiya dropped an answering goal in the paint to reclaim the lead for the west-siders.
Ragsac sank 1 of 2 free throws to knot the game at 38-38 and set the stage for Imais game-winning charity try.
Ragsac led all scorers with 12 points, while teammates Leo Calvin and Imai chipped in with 8 each for Kapa’a (1-0).
Ross Acoba and Kyle Pigao dropped in 9 apiece for the Menehune (0-2).
The Warriors travel to the Kaua’i High Gym next Tuesday, January 14, to take on the Red Raiders (1-0) in a 5:30 p.m. tilt.
