This time, it was for real.
A game after Kaua’i officials declared a premature championship – following their 2-2 tie to the Kapa’a Warriors – the Raiders blanked the Waimea Menehune 2-0 to clinch a berth to the 2003 HHSAA Soccer Championships.
Kaua’i (5-1-1) got started early in the first half, when Amber Santos chipped in the first goal, assisted by Stacey Sueoka.
The Raider defense held Waimea at bay throughout the game, and sealed the championship in the second half on a long goal by Shauna Tachibana that cruised just over the goalie’s finger tips and into the net.
The Raiders maintained a steady attack on the Menehune goal, and despite the win, they were challenged by Waimea keeper Fa’a Taala, who had a number of big blocks throughout.
BOYS – The Raider boys varsity soccer team bounced back from its 3-1 loss to the Kapa’a Warriors with a 2-0 shutout of the Waimea Menehune Thursday at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue.
Kaulana Lemke knocked in a quick chip in front of the net to put the Raiders up 1-0 mid-second half. They sealed the contest late in the game with a Chris Colacino goal. The Menehune were caught by surprise by a speedy Colacino, who swiped the ball from Menehune defenders for an easy shot on goal.
The Raiders had already captured the KIF Championship last week. They will be the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation team representing the Garden Island at the HHSAA Championships.
