LIHUE – The Kaua’i Red Raider girls won a title Saturday night, but you wouldn’t have known.
No cheering, high-fives or back patting. No streamers or gatorade-wars, wet coaches or champagne (sparkling cider, in this case) pops.
The Raiders saw no reason to cheer Saturday night, not after they blew a 1-0 halftime lead and ended up tied with the Kapa’a Warriors 2-2.
They aren’t celebrating, but maybe that’s why the Kaua’i Red Raiders have been champions all season long – maybe their desire to win is something that’s carried them while they outscored the league 12-3 through 6 games, compiling a 4-1-1 record.
The Raiders captured the title with 3 games left on the KIF schedule. Kaua’i’s boys team clinched the title on Thursday.
In a game muddied by sporatic rains, Kaua’i’s Amber Santos raced past two defenders to drill in the Raiders’ first goal.
Kaua’i goalie Ashton Pagao’s 5 saves kept Kapa’a out of the goal for the remainder of the half, but the Warriors would find a way in.
Larisa Nebre chipped in a score to tie the game at 1 apiece at the onset of the second half.
Kaua’i seemed well on their way to a fifth win after Janee Correia floated a georgeous shot from near the 18 to the right corner of the net. But the Warriors bounced back with a lob shot from Danielle Hill, whose score ended the game in deadlock.

The Kapa’a boys had something to say to the new KIF champs: We aren’t stepping down without a little noise.
The 2002 KIF champs topped the Raiders 4-1 Saturday night, two days after Kaua’i clinched the KIF title.
Kapa’a jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kaua’i own goal in the first half.
Christian Marston then drilled two goals to put Kapa’a up 3-0. Kaua’i scored one goal on a penalty kick, taken by Chris Colacino.
Kapa’a’s fourth goal was from Tyson Wakayama on a penalty shot.
JV Soccer –
Girls: The Kaua’i Red Raider jayvee girls soccer team topped Kapa’a 2-1 Saturday. Emma Makepa-Foley and Allison Arakaki scored for Kaua’i. Rancee Wilson scored for Kapa’a.
Boys: The Kapa’a boys jayvee soccer team beat Kaua’i 3-1 Saturday. Matthew Boldt and Lucas Brower scored for Kapa’a, and Bryce Hosaka scored the Raiders’ lone goal.
