Gladys Kamakakuokalani ‘Ainoa Brandt is being remembered next week at special services scheduled in Honolulu.
Brandt, a life-long educator, passed away on Jan. 15 at the age of 96. She is a former long-time principal at Kapa’a High School and has many family members and friends on Kaua’i.
Her formal funeral service is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Kawaihao Church in Honolulu on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
On Monday, Jan. 27 a service is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama Campus at the Bernice Bishop Memorial Chapel.
On Tuesday, Jan. 28 the Kamakauokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai’i is planning a Celebration of Hula in Brandt’s honor. The event starts at 5 p.m. and is scheduled to run until 9 p.m.
At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, Brandt’s remains are to be placed in Kawaihao Church for a vigil leading up to her funeral service the next day, and in keeping with her ali’i lineage. Her remains will be received by the benevolent society Hale o na Ali’i, of which she was the highest ranking member.
Kawaihao Church will be open throughout the night until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
From 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday friends and relatives are presenting an organized program of tribute in music and chant in the sanctuary of Kawaihao Church.
At 5 p.m. a pre-service ho’okupu will be offered by six organizations with which Brand was closely affiliated: The Kamehameha Schools, the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club, the University of Hawai’i Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, the ‘Aha Punana Leo, the Hui Hanai (Auxiliary to the Queen Lili’uokalani Children’s Center, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. A simple Christian funeral service is scheduled for 6 p.m., in keeping with Brandt’s wishes. Officiating will be Kahu David Ka’upu, retired chaplain of the Kamehameha Schools. At 9:30 p.m. the service will end. Brandt is scheduled to be interred at a private family service on Thursday, Jan. 30.
