Joseph Gonsalves
Joseph Gonsalves, Jr., of Kapa’a died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on Feb. 1, 2003 at the age of 59.
Born in Lihu’e on May 11, 1943, he was a heavy equipment operator for Lihue Plantation for 40 years. He also worked at the Kauai Ranch and Wal-Mart.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Joseph Gonsalves and Adeline “Lena” Gonsalves-Perreira. He is survived by his wife: Iranda “Randy” Gonsalves; 11 children: Shawnelle “Kuulei” (Chris Corpuz) Palomares, Leimomi (Chad Daligdig) Palomares, Noelani Palomares Melandish, Sadie (Mike Lovell) Gonsalves, JeriMay Gonsalves, Helen (Michael) Smith, Adeline (Tony) Coltes, Joseph (Lynn) Gonsalves III, John (Davelynn) Gonsalves, Wayne (Lynn) Gonsalves; three sisters: Rose (David) Victorino, Angie (Bill) Souza, Brenda (Ernest) Moniz; three brothers: Richard (Donna) Gonsalves, Wayne “Rocky” (Debbie) Perreira & Godfrey Perreira, 32 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Feb. 7, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. where services will be celebrated at 7 p.m. by Father Keahi and again on Saturday, Feb. 8, 11 a.m. at Hanama’ulu Beach Park for a memorial service and scattering to follow. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Segundo Baniaga
Segundo Baniaga of Kaumakani died at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home on Jan. 27, 2003, at the age of 80.
Born in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippins on March 28, 1922, he was a heavy equipment mechanic with Olokele Sugar Co.
He is survived by his wife, Angelita of ‘Ele’ele; two sons, Ryan (Kathy) Baniaga of Dallas, Texas and Randal Baniaga of ‘Ele’ele; two daughters, Sandi (Kent) Brown of Las Vegas, Nev. and Sharla Baniaga of Po’ipu; three grandchildren, Marcy Brown, Morris Brown and Bryson Baniaga; three brothers, Francisco Baniaga of Kaumakani, Lauro (Vicky) Baniaga of Philippines and Emilio Baniaga of Philippines; three sisters, Frances Gallegos of Waipahu, O’ahu, Helen (Bonifacio) Ramos of Waipahu, O’ahu and Rosita (Demetrio) Alonzo of Philippines; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel, service officiated by Rev. James Brooking will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the West Kaua’i United Methodist Church in Kaumakani; service officiated by Rev. James Brooking will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Hanapepe Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

James K. Azeka
James K. Azeka of ‘Ele’ele Nani, died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Feb. 5, 2003, at the age of 76.
Born in Hanalei on June 6, 1926, he was the owner of Jimmy’s Sales in Puhi.
Preceded in death by daughter, Laurie H. Odo, he is survived by wife, Tsugie; son, Myles (Faye) Azeka of Lihu’e; four grandchildren; four brothers, Harry Azeka of O’ahu, Hiroshi (Patsy) Azeka of Hanalei, Itsuo (Kazuko) Azeka of California and Clifford Azeka of O’ahu; two sisters, Mildred Azeka of O’ahu and Lorraine (Yoshio) Katsumoto of O’ahu; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service officiated by Pastor Merv Walker will begin at 6 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.

Evaline Kanahele
Evaline Kanahele of Hanapepe, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 5, 2003, at the age of 62.
Born in Ni’ihau on Feb. 29, 1940, she was a lei maker.
She is survived by four sons: Oihana Leimana (Dale Evans) Kanahele, Jr., Wilson (Marylou) Kanahele, Bernard (Diana) Kanahele, Tom (Donna) Kanahele; three daughters: Evaline Kanahele, Doreen Kanahele, Mileka Puuwai Kanahele; one sister: Eddna (Dennis) Simao; three brothers: John (Kuulei) Kaaumoana, Bernard Kamala, George Kamala, 27 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren.
Private services were held. Arrangements were handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Earl Phillips, Sr.
Earl Stanley Phillips, Sr., of Wainiha Powerhouse Road, Kaua’i, died Feb. 3, 2003 at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Born in Honolulu on Nov. 30, 1935, he was a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife: Henrietta; sons, Earl S. Jr., Don C., Dan “Bo” E., and Jon J.; daughter, Erlette Smith; sisters: Audrey Perreira, Helen Haa, and Ida Abaire, 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Borthwick Mortuary from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. where services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Atsushi Hirano
Atsushi Hirano of McBryde, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 5, 2003 at the age of 88.
Born in Wahiawa, on May 11, 1914, he was a Surveyor with McBryde Sugar Co.
He is survived by son, Glenn Hirano of Buena Park, Calif.; two daughters, Maureen (Roy) Miyashiro of McBryde and Susan Hirano of Madison, Wisconsin; two brothers, Take (Michi) Hirano of La Palma, Calif. and Alfred Hirano of Koloa; two sisters, Edith Takahashi of Kane’ohe, and Sumiko Kubota of Oakridge, Tenn.; son-in-law, Clyde Ogomori of Gardena, Calif. 4 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Kauai Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe; service officiated by Rev. Itagaki will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.
