Two Anahola residents were arrested and charged following a Kaua’i Police Department investigation of the breaking into of more than 30 vehicles over the past two weeks.
Robert H. Goodwin, Jr., 39, and Sunnyjo N. Kauanui, 27, were both arrested Tuesday afternoon in Anahola. The pair are acquaintances, police said; Kauanui was arrested in her home, while Goodwin was arrested while walking along a road in Anahola.
Property recovered by the KPD includes cameras, bags, clothing and other items. The articles will be kept as evidence until the owners can be contacted to identify their belongings.
The Westside and North Shore were hit hardest, but the break-ins happened all around the island, police said. The majority of cars entered were rental vehicles, but some locals were also struck.
Police could not say for which specific incidences Goodwin and Kauanui were arrested, but from Jan. 22 to their arrest, more than 35 reports of car break-ins were reported. Police could not comment on how their investigation led detectives to the pair, except to say they made the arrests “based on leads and investigation.”
Cars broken into were parked at the Kalalau Lookout in Koke’e State Park, Maha’ulepu, Polihale State Park, Ke’e Beach Park, and Po’ipu Beach Park and Kipu Falls.
