Kaua’i Community College representatives participated in an event at the Hawai’i State Capitol in Honolulu Tuesday where faculty and students from ten University of Hawai’i campuses met with state legislators to showcase the strengths of their programs.
Through an exhibit, KCC representatives provided information that demonstrated the Puhi college is a “comprehensive one,” and focused on some of the college’s strongest programs, including nursing, culinary arts and electronics and others, said KCC Provost Peggy Cha.
“That was the thrust of it,” said Cha, who attended the event.
The formal program for the “UH Day at the State Capitol” was scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., featuring chanting by UH Hilo student Ikaika Bentolina and entertainment by the Kanikapila Singers from Leeward Community College. UH President Evan S. Dobelle was to give remarks.
The event was being held for the first time in many years and enabled the university to host “a system-wide celebration” of the “many exceptional programs and student and faculty talents from all campuses,” UH officials said in a news release.
Legislators were invited to meet UH faculty, staff and students and to view a variety of displays and exhibits to showcase what UH officials described as the “excellence and diversity” of the university system.
KCC representatives also showcased the college’s transfer program, which allows students to earn two-year degrees and prepare themselves for four-year colleges, Cha said.
Another asset at KCC is the University Center, which brings 20 baccalaureate and graduate-level degrees to Kaua’i through some sister campuses, Cha said.
