Kapa’a, Kaua’i rule at KIF title meet
The Kapa’a girls team as well as the Kaua’i boys squad reigned supreme at the KIF championship swim competition on Saturday at the Kaua’i High School pool.
The Warriors’ girls team had a balanced effort throughout the 22-event competition in totaling 90 points.
Waimea was second with 46 points followed by Kaua’i with 39, Island School (33) and Kula rounded out the scoring with 16 points.
The Red Raiders edged Kapa’a 84-77 in the boys event with Waimea in third place with 17 points and Kula in fourth at 10 points.
In the girls event, several swimmers had solid performances.
For Kapa’a, Amy Lloyd earned a first place finish in the 50-yard free race at 28.70.
Zuri Pommerenk also had a great day with a win in the 100-free (1:04.66). Pommerenk also helped the 200-free relay squad of teammates Bristol King, Sarah Haupt and Lloyd take home first place (1:57.93).
For Waimea, the 200-medley relay team of Tiffani Tumbaga, Leilani Alquiza, Katelyn Umetsu and Jade Cassmass was first at 2:11.99.
Umetsu also earned top honors in the 200-individual race (2:34.08) and 100-backstroke (1:11.07).
For Kaua’i, Roxanne Dubois had a solid afternoon earning a second-place finish in the 500-free race (6:35.12).
For the Kaua’i boys team, Keenan Anaya set more pool records. In the 100-fly event, Anaya blazed to the finish line with a time of 58.04 besting his own record-setting mark of 1:00.17.
Anaya won the 200-free race (1:58.11) and helped the 200-medley and 400-free relay teams of Jarred Perry, Jason Ebesu and Nick Murray claim wins (1:51.83 in the 200-medley) and (3:41.54 in the 400-free).
Perry and Ebesu earned top honors in the 100-fly (1:02.92) and 100-breast (1:07.11) respectively.
For Kapa’a, Michael Maddock won the 200-individual event (2:22.19) while teammate Kelii Akana-Kaaihue was first in the 50-free (23.51).
Jeremy Albano claimed two second-place finishes in the 100-free (54.56) and 100-breast (1:07.92).
For the Menehune, Bo Domingcil was tops in the 100-free (52.95) and second in the 50-free (23.59).
