The Kaua’i County Ocean Safety Bureau Thursday morning closed the Ha’ena Beach Park on the North Shore to swimmers and surfers due to 30-foot surf and strong rip currents.
Because heavy rainfall that fell Thursday morning caused water to rise in Manoa Stream and may have prevented lifeguards from evacuating the area, lifeguards were relocated to the south side of the stream, according to county spokesperson Vida Mossman.
Hanalei fire Capt. Jay Harms reported no rescues had been performed by Wednesday afternoon and that North Shore beaches were pretty much deserted.
“So far, knock on wood,” Harms said. “It rained all morning, and it is overcast and we have cold northwest winds. So that (the conditions) chops up the surf so that nobody is surfing out there.”
Because of bad weather, most people have stayed away from the beaches, Harms said.
A report from Princeville said the bad weather had cleared by yesterday afternoon.
