Jacob Maka, Jr.
Jacob “Jake” Maka Jr., of Hanalei, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 16, 2003 at the age of 30.
Born in Lihu’e, on Feb. 6, 1973, he was a heavy equipment operator with J & B Escavating.
He is survived by parents, Jacob and Beryl Maka of Hanalei; grandfather, James Masada of Hanalei; sister, Nani Maka of Hanalei; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, at Waioli Hui’ia Church; service officiated by Rev. Thomas Yoshida will begin at 3 p.m. followed by burial at the Hanalei Community Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Earl Phillips, Sr.
Earl Stanley Phillips, Sr., of Wainiha Powerhouse Road, Kaua’i, died Feb. 3, 2003 at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Born in Honolulu on Nov. 30, 1935, he was a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife: Henrietta; sons, Earl S. Jr., Don C., Dan “Bo” E., and Jon J.; daughter, Erlette Smith; sisters: Audrey Perreira, Helen Haa, and Ida Abaire, 17 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. William’s Catholic Church in Hanalei at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, with Father Vincent Curtain (SM) officiating. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Wilfred Baldwin
Wilfred “Bunt” Baldwin of Koloa, died Feb. 18, 2003 at the age of 89.
Born in Pasadena, Calif., on June 30, 1913, he was manager for Lihu’e and Kekaha Sugar Mill. Assistant Manager at Pioneer Mill Sugar Plantations.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Baldwin of Koloa; son, Peter (Linda) Baldwin of Koloa; two daughters, Celie (Greg) Williams of Koloa, Mary Agnes Baldwin of Honolulu, 5 grandchildren, Jenni, Kelly, Mark, Lianne and Bruce, numerous nieces and nephews.
In celebrating his life there will be a gathering of Friends on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 5 p.m. at the family residence: 5451 Waila’au Rd., Koloa. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.
Donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation or Wilcox Hospital Foundation in his memory.

Joseph Rodrigues
Joseph H. Rodrigues died on Feb. 18, 2003 at the age of 103. He was the first child of Joseph and Evangeline Rodrigues. His parents immigrated from Madeira Island and San Miguel, the Azores, Portugal, in the mid-1880s.
He graduated in 1919 from the old St. Louis College on River Street in Honolulu and was the oldest alumnus at the time of his demise. He began a career in teaching that lasted for 46 years, mainly at Kapa’a Elementary School as a sixth grade teacher. Besides his educational career, he was active in business and politics.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen and all of his siblings: Mary Texeira, Julia and Evangeline Lizama, Vincent and Alfred Rodrigues and Violet Brandt. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, Feb. 24, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa’a from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Kuel. Burial to follow at St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.
