Anaya sets school record at KIF swim meet

Kaua’i, Kapa’a teams claim first place

LIHUE – Having already secured a spot at the state meet, Kaua’i freshman swimmer Keenan Anaya wasn’t about to take it easy on Saturday in the KIF qualifying event hosted by Waimea.

Instead, Anaya showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with at the state event after breaking his own personal Kaua’i pool record in the boys 200-yard individual medley.

The Red Raiders’ swimmer cruised to a 10 second winning margin and a record time of 2:13.68.

He also qualified for the state meet in the 100 free (53.22).

Anaya’s wins helped the Red Raiders dominate Saturday’s meet winning with 90 points. Kapa’a was second with 73 points while Waimea was third at 16 points.

In the girls competition, the girls 200 medley relay squad of Amy Lloyd, Bristol King, Liana Nakazawa and Ava Pommerenk crushed the Kaua’i pool record with a winning time of 2:07.50.

The group set the early tone in lifting the Warriors to 72 points and first place. Kaua’i was second with 65 points while Waimea was third with 35 points.

In other girls action, Waimea’s Katelyn Umetsu earned two first-place finishes in the 200 individual (2:32.89) and the 100 fly (1:08.13). Umetsu’s performance in the 100 fly set a Kaua’i pool record.

In boys action, the Red Raiders’ team of Jarred Perry, Anaya, Jason Ebesu and Matt Murray earned a state berth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.96).

Perry and Jeremy Albano of Kapa’a notched state-qualifying times in the 200 free (1:59.30 and 2:00.81 respectively).

Waimea’s Bo Domingeil also qualified for the state meet with a time of 23.43 in the 50 free race while the Kapa’a team of Albano, Andrew Salvador, Michael Maddock and Kelii Akana-Kaaihue earned a qualifying spot at the state event and a Kaua’i pool record in the 400 free relay (3:40.16).

On Saturday, the final KIF swim meet will take place at the Kaua’i high school pool starting at 10 a.m.
