PRINCEVILLE – Members of eight college teams will take in 54 holes of golf on the Princeville Makai course over the next two days as the 2003 Collegiate Cup kicks off today at 7:45 a.m.
Hosted by the Western Kentucky University who captured the 2002 team championship, this year’s field includes teams from the University of Akron in Ohio, American University from Washington, D.C., Eastern Michigan University, the University of Iowa, Marquette University from Wisconsin, and making their first appearances on Kaua’i, Saint Joseph’s University from Philadelphia, and Simon Fraser University from British Columbia, Canada.
Nathan Colson, a sophomore from Marquette University, carded a 213 Low 54-hole total in 2002 and will return to Princeville with an individual win at the Ironhorse Intercollegiate. As a team, Marquette posted a solid fall with two third place finishes and four top 10’s.
John Mullendore, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers’ team captain, came up with a low round 69 in the 2002 Collegiate Cup final round, and will be back for his third appearance at Princeville to introduce freshman Robby Shaw whose 72.8 average in the fall led the Hilltoppers’ 295.5-stroke team average.
Chris Jamieson posted a team-best 73.29-stroke average over five fall tournaments for the University of Akron Zips, and also posted three top-20 finishes to lead the Zips to a 6th finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
The Zips post a 299.6 stroke team average.
The American University Eagles posts a 306.8 stroke team average and scored two runner-up finishes at Columbia and their home tournament with freshman Ben Hartman winning his first collegiate title by winning the AU Classic.
Eastern Michigan University with a 290.1 stroke team average got their season going with a win at Bowling Green before going on to have a good fall season with a runner-up finish at Xavier.
The 2003 Collegiate Cup will feature 36 holes played today with the final round 18 holes going off on Saturday morning.
Antigua, Clif Bars, Jox Sox, NYX Golf Eyewear, Powerbilt, Sabona, Sonartech, and X-Sports join the Princeville Resort and the Kaua’i Coconut Beach Resort as this year’s sponsors.
