Hawai’i’s delegate, Kaua’i’s Alicia Malia Michioka, will be one of 51 contestants featured in the show’s opening number before the names of the 10 finalists are announced.
Four former Miss Hawaii-USA titleholders have gone on to win the national pageant. In 1962, 18-year-old Macel Wilson of Honolulu was the first, followed in 1972 by 21-year-old Tanya Wilson of Honolulu.
In 1978, 20-year-old Judi Anderson captured the national title and nearly walked away with the Miss Universe title as well and in 1998, Hawai’i’s Brooke Lee not only won the Miss USA title but also was crowned Miss Universe.
Tonight’s pageant, which will be co-hosted by model Daisy Fuentes and “Access Hollywood” correspondent Billy Bush, is expected to be “a classy, elegant, primetime event,” according to its producers.
Shauntay Hinton, Miss USA 2002, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the telecast. Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are judged in three categories, including swimsuit, evening gown and personality interviews.
“Burn the Floor,” billed as one of the most entertaining theatrical dance sensations on the world stage, will perform during the telecast.
