PRINCEVILLE – The University of Iowa started strong to take the early team lead in the Kaua’i Collegiate Cup at the Princeville Makai Course on Friday.
The Hawkeyes finished the first round with a team score of 289, five shots ahead of the University of Akron. Marquette was third with 296 points.
The 2002 Collegiate Cup champion Western Kentucky Hilltoppers were fourth behind the pack with 298 points while Eastern Michigan was fifth with 300 points.
Simon Fraser (302), St. Joseph’s (305) and American University (308) rounded out the first-round scoring.
Aaron Krueger of Iowa helped the Hawkeyes take the early edge with a 37 on the front nine followed by a 32 on the back nine for a 69.
Krueger’s teammate Bo Anderson also finished with a 69 to pace Iowa.
Kevin Moore of Akron also had a solid round, finishing with a 69 of his own. Western Kentucky’s Jared Topmiller was fourth with a 70 while teammate Robby Shaw was next among individuals with an even-par 72.
St. Joseph’s Brian McDermott was sixth with a 72 while Eastern Michigan’s Brad Pemberton also added a 72.
Marquette’s Joe Weber (72) and Steve Sass (73) were next in line.
St. Joseph’s Billy Stewart, American University’s Ben Hartman, Seth Kaplan and David Stone, Akron’s Blake Sattler, and Simon Fraser’s David Willamson all finished with a 74.
Simon Fraser’s Ryan Weber finished six shots back of the lead with a 75 followed by Akron’s Chris Jamieson (75), Eastern Michigan’s Tyler Hammond (75), Marquette’s Kyle Murphy (75), Iowa’s Luke Miller (75).
Korey Mahoney of Eastern Michigan, Matt Hilton of Marquette, Ryan Roe of Simon Fraser, Russ Johnston of Akron and Erik Feldick of Iowa all ended the first round with a 76.
The final round of the tournament begins today.
