A head-on collision between two vehicles on the Wailua Bridge Friday night sent at least one person to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.
A Kaua’i police official said the passenger was taken from a van after the accident, reported shortly after 10 p.m. and was transported by an American Medical Response ambulance to the hospital.
The person’s identity and condition were not known.
The police official said it appeared the driver of the other vehicle, a sedan, was not hurt in the collision. Witnesses at the scene said three ambulances were on the scene , along with firefighters and police.
The collision of the vehicles forced the closure of southbound and northbound traffic on the bridge for at least an hour, creating huge traffic jams in East Kaua’i for a time.
The police said northbound traffic on Kuhio Highway from Lihu’e to Kapa’a was diverted onto a recently renovated plantation bridge that runs parallel to the Wailua Bridge. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
