Vilma Dunbar
Vilma Elaine Dunbar, born Feb. 19, 1921 in Providence, RI, died on Feb. 25, 2003 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
The wife of Captain John P. Dunbar, USN (Ret.) JAG, (deceased), they had six children.
A Navy WAVE during WW II, she later she worked in the House of Representatives, Wash. D.C., Time/Life Magazine in New York City, the Korean Consulate in Hawai’i as an executive secretary skilled in diplomatic protocol, and in Child and Spouse Abuse at Pearl Harbor.
Vilma was a kind human being who loved Hawai’i, writing, singing and horseback riding.
Family and friends may call on Mar. 6, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo at 9 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua’i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Bertha Skelly
Bertha Skelly of Kalaheo, died at her residence on Feb. 17, 2003, at the age of 92.
Born in NYC on July 13, 1920, she retired from Cirillo Brother Oil and Fuel Co. in New York City at the age of 79 where she was a receptionist and switchboard operator for over 30 years. She began her work at AT&T and was one of the operators assigned to the high profiled Lindbergh baby kidnapping case in 1932.
She was active in the American Legion and was president of the Bronx chapter in the late 40s. She was involved with both the Girl and Boy Scout organizations. A devout Catholic and member of the Sacred Heart Society she sponsored many young deacons through the priesthood as well as caring for the nuns at St. Raymond Convent in Bronx New York.
She is survived by her sons: Thomas (Muriel) Skelly of New Syrma Beach, Florida and Joseph (Roxanne) Alfonso of Fayetteville North Carolina; and her daughter Cira (Jose de Jesus) Castillo of Kalaheo, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Private services were held on Feb. 22, by Father Keahi with burial at the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Eugenia Pinero
Eugenia Pinero of Lihu’e died Feb. 24, 2003, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 94.
A homemaker, she was born Nov. 25, 1908, in Maui.
She is survived by five sons, Joseph Maelo Torres of Honolulu, John (Elsie) Davis, Sr. of Lihue, Jose (Helena) Carrancho of Honolulu, Albert (Betty Ann) Carrancho of Honolulu and Leroy Jose Pinero of Lihu’e; four daughters: Gloria (Anselmo) Alvarez of California; Juana Silva of California; Theresa Harley of Honolulu and Carmelita Iserman of New York; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Family and friends may call on Monday, March 3, at Immaculate Conception Church for a Memorial Mass at 7 a.m. Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
