John Perreira
John “Sonny” Perreira of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, died at home on March 8, 2003 at the age of 78.
Born in Koloa on July 9, 1924 he was a laborer with Nelson Construction Co.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Santos Perreira. He is survived by son, John Perreira Jr. of Kalaheo; two step-sons, Alfred (Helena) Medeiros of Kalaheo and Wayne (Shirley) Medeiros of Lihu’e; seven step-daughters, Brenda (Butch) Durant of Lihu’e, Elaine (Squeaky) Kealoha of Lihu’e, Eleanor Haumea of Lihu’e, Clara (Mel) Leasau of Oma’o, Mary (Allan) Kealoha of Honolulu, Donna Medeiros of Hanama’ulu and Cookie Silva of Oma’o; two brothers, Stephen (Bernice) Perreira of Kalaheo and Norman (Patricia) Perreira of Reno; three sisters, Delphine McCormick of Kalaheo, Lillian (Richard) Jardin of Kalaheo and Adelaide (Larry) Ross of Kalaheo; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Sat. March 15, 2003 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, service officiated by Father Keahi will begin at 10 a.m. Followed by burial at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Casual attire is suggested.

Benjamin Cabatan
Benjamin Cabatan of Lihu’e, died on March 3, 2003, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 88. An equipment operator for McBryde Sugar, he was born in the Philippines on Aug. 21, 1914.
He is survived by his wife: Sergia Cabatan of Puhi, seven children: Emelda Cabatan of Puhi, Nestor Cabatan of Puhi, Leonardo (Primitiva) Cabatan of ‘Ele’ele, Norma (Claro) Reposar of Hanapepe, Lucing (Fernando) Nino of the Philippines, Triping Cabatan of the Philippines, and Puring (Justinyano) Abaya, Jr. of the Philippines. There are numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit with family on Friday, March 14, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, March 15, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel where viewing will be at 9 a.m. Services will be conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua’i Memorial Gardens.

George Alves, Sr.
George Wayne Alves, Sr. of Sacramento, Calif., and formerly of Kaua’i. died on Feb. 7, 2003, in Sacramento, at the age of 57.
Born Aug. 25, 1945, in Lihu’e, Kaua’i, he was a retired building inspector for the city of San Jose, Calif.
He returned to Kaua’i in 1990, introducing Kauaians to karaoke. He opened the first karaoke store on Kaua’i called “U Can Sing.”
He is survived by his wife, Theresa “Teri” Alves; one daughter: Monica Alves; three sons: George Wayne (Michelle) Alves, Jr. of California, Derrick (Stephanie) Alves of California and James Alves of California; raised his grandson Daniel Alves-Centers; five grandchildren; mother Frances Carreira of Kapa’a; grandmother Ida Barretto of Kapa’a; one brother; David (Dona) Alves of Jamestown, Calif.; three sisters: Eileen (Philip, Sr.) Rapozo of Kapa’a, Patricia (Robert, Sr.) Cremer of Kapa’a and Charlotte (David) Rapozo of Kapa’a; one uncle John F. Barretto of Kapa’a; and numerous aunts, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, March 14, with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. The family requests that flowers to be omitted and casual attire is suggested.
