In the opening game of the 2003 KIF season, Alec Reichle struckout 10 Menehune hitters in lifting the Red Raiders to a 4-3 win.
On Wednesday, Reichle wasn’t as sharp but the result was the same.
The Kaua’i hurler pitched a complete game yielding just two runs on three hits in helping the Red Raiders improve to 4-1 on the season after a 5-2 win over Waimea at Vidinha Stadium.
Reichle walked six batters while striking out five Menehune hitters.
He also hit a batter and seemed to work with a runner on base in most innings.
Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Red Raiders pushed across three important runs to take command of the game.
In the frame, Reichle and Jake Oketani hit RBI singles while Waimea hurler Michael Yaris walked in a run with the bases loaded.
Yaris pitched well in the defeat after taking over for starter Shawn Yadao in the fourth inning.
The two hurlers yielded just six hits in the loss.
The Menehune (2-2 in the KIF) were hurt by defensive mistakes in the field which led to the first two Kaua’i runs.
Waimea scored its first run in the fifth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Clarence Aki who had two hits on the afternoon.
Levi Maeda added a double to center field in the third inning for the Menehune.
Aki’s run-scoring hit in the fifth brought Waimea to within a run at 2-1.
However, Reichle settled down until the seventh when six Menehune batters hit.
Waimea even brought the tying run to the plate in Brandon Ishibashi. Reichle struckout Ishibashi to end the threat.
In the first inning, the Menehune put the first two batters on base on a walk to Michael Ishibashi and then a single to left by Aki.
Reichle then retired Rayson Cacal, Brandon Ishibashi and Robbie Correa to end the top of the first.
Waimea faces Kapa’a on Saturday in a KIF doubleheader at Hanapepe Field beginning at 11 a.m. Kaua’i next plays on Wednesday against the Warriors at Ron Martin Field at 2:45 p.m.
