WAIMEA -The Waimea girls basketball team used a 10-3 run to end the game and Virginia Aguilar scored a team-high eight points in helping the Menehune hold off Kapa’a 35-34 in a physical battle on Saturday night at Waimea High School.
The Warriors (0-1 in the second round of the KIF) led for most of the game before Waimea crawled back into the contest late in the final period.
After one of two free throws gave the Warriors a 31-25 lead with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Waimea scored the next nine points to pull ahead.
Aguilar’s inside score after a missed jumper put the Menehune (2-0 in the second round of the KIF) up 33-31.
In the closing seconds, the Warriors had a final chance to gain the win but could not pull down a rebound after Waimea’s Joanna Jacinto missed two free throws.
The Warriors were led by Ihilani Yama’s game-high 12 points while teammates Tania Tasic and Nichol Kunioka-Volz added six points apiece.
Ashley Mier and Ashlee Vea combined for 14 points for the Menehune.
In the JV game, the Warriors led 8-6 after one quarter before the Menehune fought back to claim a 23-19 halftime edge.
In the second 16 minutes of action, Waimea outscored Kapa’a 31-11 to post a 54-30 win.
Waimea was led by Melissa Moreno’s 14 points while teammate Hokulea Magno added nine points.
For Kapa’a Kristin Yanagawa scored nine points and Kennilyn Nakamura totaled eight points.

Waimea’s Michael Yaris outdueled Kaua’i’s Alec Reichle and Clarence Aki singled in the game’s only run as the Menehune baseball team earned a 1-0 victory in the first game of the KIF second round on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
In Game 2, the Red Raiders fought back for a 4-1 win.
In Saturday’s opening contest, Yaris yielded just two hits in a complete-game effort.
He struckout three and walked a batter in a tremendous performance.
The Menehune took the lead in the top of the fourth when Aki brought Rayson Cacal home with an RBI single.
Reichle was solid as well as he gave up four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
In the second game, the Red Raiders (1-1 in the KIF) scored all of their runs in bottom of the third inning.
Kaua’i totaled five hits in the outburst.
The Red Raiders jumped on the scoreboard 2-0 on Garen Itamura’s RBI single and a throwing error after the hit.
The big blow in the inning came off of the bat of Kirby Yates who blasted the first pitch he saw from Waimea’s Shawn Yadao into center field for a two-run triple.
The Menehune (1-1 in the KIF) scored their only run in the top of the sixth on a passed ball.
Yates also was effective on the mound as he went the distance yielding five hits with five strikeouts.
He also walked four batters.
The Red Raiders totaled seven hits, most coming in the first three innings.
Yadao went 2 2/3 innings yielding all four runs while Robbie Correa finished the rest of the contest. Correa allowed just two hits in the game.
The Menehune host Kapa’a on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. at the Hanapepe Field while the Red Raiders next play the Warriors on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ron Martin Field.
Warriors best Kula School
PO’IPU – The Kapa’a boys and girls tennis teams won nine of 10 matches on Saturday in KIF action at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
In boys play, the Warriors earned a 5-0 win with Andrew Walpole taking No. 2 singles 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 over Kula’s Simmon Effrin.
In girls play, Kapa’a bested Kula 4-1. Ariel Carlson of Kula won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3. In No. 2 singles, Ashley Valvieja of Kapa’a defeated Kula’s Moana Ferry 7-5, 6-2.
