KILAUEA — With three seconds left on the clock, Kilauea Hui had a chance to tie the contest with the Westside Hornets as Kieren Pond approached the charity stripe for three chances.
The first shot dropped, but the remaining pair bounced away from the hoop as the Hornet Wahine continued their string of wins with a 29-27 win over the Hui in the KYBA 14-Under girls basketball games played Wednesday night at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Wednesday night’s victory tops a string of three wins in as many nights as the Hornets topped the Waimea Minihunes Monday night 30-23 before edging past the Kaumakani Supersonics 19-17 Tuesday night in Kalaheo.
Guard Tori Espino put in a pair from 3-pointland to keep the Hornets in the chase, and finished the night with nine points before fouling out of the contest with 9.9 seconds showing on the clock.
Outnumbered in the height department, the Hornets got six-point showings from Cherilyn Kua and Kierra Barba with Brytney Lanning adding four points along with guard Chayla Sherman.
Caroline Troutman kept the Hornets off balance with a good share of offensive and defensive rebounds, but her contribution was capping drives as she led the Hui with eight points in the loss, two field goals coming in the critical fourth period.
Pond ended the night with five points with Kapua Chandler’s hustle resulting in four points in the loss.
Wailua 21, Kapaa Mystics 15
The Kapaa Mystics battled back in the second quarter with buckets from Britney Carvalho, Kela Caspillo, Natasha Furtado, and Teeana Valpoon to erase a 9-0 first quarter, but the firepower fizzled as they dropped a 21-15 matchup against Wailua.
Poerava Gantt notched five of her game-high eight points in the third period to lead the Wailua wahine to their victory with Leisha Moniz and Kennilyn Nakamura chipping in four points apiece.
Carvalho led the Mystics scoring with six points including a trey in the final frame.
