Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton of Princeville Monday won the open women’s division of the three-day Local Motion / Ezekiel Surf Into Summer surfing contest, according to a report from Honolulu.
The event was held off Magic Island, at the Ala Moana Bowl surf spot, in Honolulu.
The three-day event is said to be one of the biggest amateur surfing contests in the world, and is in its nineteenth year of competition. Current Association of Surfing Professional champion Andy Irons of Hanalei surfed in the contest during his school days on Kauai.
Hamilton is scheduled to represent Kauai in mid-June at Trestles in Orange County, Calif. in the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships. A number of other Kauai surfers competed in the Local Motion contest; watch The Garden Island sports page for additional results.
