The Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery was the hub of Memorial Day activities on Sunday.
Several hundred people gathered for the annual remembrance service honoring “All Gave Some, Some Gave All.”
The event was marked with plenty of flowers and lei, patriotic music and prayers and remembering and honoring Kaua’i’s soldiers who serve and others who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts took part in the ceremonies. Members of Girl Scout Troop 817 decorated the main flagpole at the cemetery. And Girl Scouts and Brownies worked side by side with Boy Scouts from Troops 83 and 148 to help clean gravestones, and place American flags, poppies and lei in preparation for the event.
Col. Theodore A Daligdig III gave the keynote address, which was followed by a musical selection by Aloha Breeze and a presentation of wreaths by the Kaua’i Veterans Council members.
A rousing rifle salute by the Kaua’i Veterans Honor Guards was enhanced by Echo Taps, played by the Waimea High School, R.O.T.C..
As a symbol of the hope for peace, Al Nebre of the Office of Veterans Services oversaw the release of peace doves.
Louis Jacinto sang several songs appropriate for the occasion. And Master of Ceremonies, Bill Honjiyo and Pastor Gene Redden both offered words of wisdom, hope and inspiration.
The annual service is hosted by the Kaua’i Veterans Council with much help from community members, organizations and businesses.
