KILAUEA — Coach Ed Phillips of the Kapaa Warriors was impressed with the quality of play of his first-time players despite the Lihue Breakaways running away in the final quarter enroute to posting a 52-44 win over his team in the first game of a double-header KYBA 14 under basketball series played Wednesday night at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Treston Rego’s height dominated both ends of the court for the Breakaways, and controlled the contest with a 22-point showing in their win. The Warriors never gave up as Elijah Phillips’ muscle powered for a matching 22-point showing from the left side, combining with the hustle of Kapaa guard Devin Saiki who ended the night with 12 points.
Lihue also got good showings from Justin Ramos who finished with nine points and a pair of field goals by Tyrus Ceria-Lux in the final seconds of the first half pulled the Breakaways to a four-point spread at the buzzer, 27-23.
Ceria-Lux ended the night with six points.
Kilauea Hui 17, Waimea Minihunes 25
Natalie Mata and Moani Durant combined for 20 points as the Waimea Minihunes overcame a tenacious Kilauea Hui defense to notch a 25-17 victory in the finale.
Mata’s pair of treys in the first half was the winning factor for Waimea as the buzzer sounded on a 11-7 Minihune margin.
Kilauea finally got off the ground in the final frame behind a trey from Caroline Troutman, and field goals by Kimiko Kuwabara and Kirstie Daly as the Hui outgunned Waimea 9-4, but missed free throws and turnovers took their toll as the Minihunes claimed the victory 25-17.
Despite the loss, Hui coach Mits Yokotake was pleased with the way his girls handled themselves on the court, jokingly noting that the last time the two teams met, Waimea manhandled the squad.
As the squad prepared to clean up the gym following their loss, two of the girls took the initiative to ask coach Yokotake, “What time is practice?”
