MAU’I – Kaua’i pitcher Kirby Yates continued where he left off at the close of the KIF regular season with a tremendous pitching performance in the opening round of the 2003 Wally Yonamine Foundation State Baseball Tournament.
Yates, who closed out Waimea in last week’s KIF championship game on Saturday, pitched a complete-game two hitter in lifting the Red Raiders (9-5) to a convincing 7-1 first-round win over Kalaheo (7-8) on Wednesday.
The Red Raiders only managed three hits in the win but took advantage of nine Kalaheo walks and two costly errors.
Jake Oketani had two RBIs while Kekoa Crowell, who had missed the last few Red Raiders’ contests, chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
With the win, Kaua’i next faces No. 1 Kamehameha (16-3) today in the quarterfinals of the state tourney.
The contest begins at 4:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders led 2-0 in the third inning before busting it open with five in the top of the sixth inning.
Sonny Harbottle took the loss for Kalaheo.
In other first-round action, Roosevelt upended Hilo 7-3.
