Hoops event runs this weekend
The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers’ (SHOPO) annual basketball tournament began on Thursday with games at Kauai High School from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
There are 12 off-island teams, three Kauai Police Department squads, and three divisions: Open, Masters (ages 35 and above), and Golden Masters (43 plus).
The double-elimination tournament runs through Saturday with games from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Kilauea Neighborhood Center and games Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kauai High.
The KPD teams’ first games are 3 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. today at Kauai High School.
County to hold registration
The County of Kauai is providing youth the opportunity to learn CPR and water safety skills through its summer Junior Lifeguard Program.
The program teaches youth water safety skills and how to respond to water-related emergencies. It is free to participants and is open to youth ages 13 to 17. The sessions are as follows:
June 9-13, Salt Pond; June 16-20, Poipu Beach; July 14-18, Hanalei Pavilion; July 21-25, Kalapaki Beach; July 26 Island Championship at Kalapaki Beach, Classes will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Spaces are limited for each session. Those interested in participating should call 241-6506 to register.
This program is made possible through the joint efforts of the County of Kauai Fire Department, the Kauai Lifeguard Association, the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association and many generous donors.
