PUHI — The Island School Gym echoed with the slap of many volleyballs being thumped against its concrete walls as 10 members of the Voyager Volleyball Club under the direction of coach Chocky Boy Chock wrapped up its 2003 season on Wednesday afternoon.
A desire to learn the game of volleyball is one of two requirements students from second through sixth grade need in order to participate in the program that is in its third year under coach Chock.
Practice days for the 2003 season was on Wednesday afternoon, and students learn the basics of the game including drills for hitting, serving, and bumping.
Chock explained that the program is open to all school children and participants must maintain a C+ or better grade in school in addition to having the desire to learn the game.
Corporate sponsors pay for the club’s uniforms and Island School allows the players to practice in the school gym.
Players pay no fees, Chock noted.
Chock, who also coordinates an intra-mural program at Island School, explained that the program starts after basketball, usually in February, and for next year, he wants to run the program through the summer.
This year’s program included second grader Brooke Yap; third graders Alex Ladenhein, Alexis Peterson, Christina King, Jennifer Grady; fourth graders Chelsea Chock, Megan Chock, Melissa Seymour, Michaela Sullivan, and fifth grader Brock Yap.
