Free class offered
Hunter Education classes are being offered by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Subjects covered are firearms and archery safety, survival and first-aid along with wildlife identification and conservation.
Attendance for all sessions is required for certification.
The classes are open to anyone 10-years of age or older and will be held August 19-21 from 6-10 p.m. at the Humane Society in Lihue.

Teams qualify for state event
The following teams qualified to compete at the August 2-3, 2003 State Senior Sectional Championships in Kona:
3.0 A Men
James Honda, Haru Watanabe, Dean Fujikawa, Glenn Yamamoto, Bill Fontana, Jim Dawson, Cal Francisco and Pat Nakagawa.
3.0 Women – Cocky Mochi
Nora Masuda, Helen Young, Sheri Boulay, Rosie Santiago, Wini Smith, Sylvia Oliver, Sharon Vea, Carole Kahn and Shizu Akama.
3.5 Men – Ginkgo Biloba
Jim Anderson, Lance Akama, Juan Lorenzo, Bill Lore, Dave Kane, Bruce Schultz, Marty Kahn and Neal Mathur.
3.5 Women – Kiahuna Tennis
Rosemary Smythe, Ilona Coffey, Lanice Pullano, Alana Fujikawa, Pat Chaffin, Carol McCarthy, Verlene Dawson, Janice Blaylock and Carmen Yasis.
Reichle earns top honor
Kauai pitcher Alec Reichle was named as the Kauai Interscholastic Federation baseball Player of the Year.
Reichle’s coach Henry Ibia Jr. was named as KIF Coach of the Year. Other KIF All-star recipients were Daryl Higashi, Kaua’i (catcher), Kyle Neuberger-Kapaa (first base), Isaac Castillo-Waimea (second base), Kirby Yates-Kauai (third base), Jake Oketani-Kauai (shortstop), Rayson Cacal-Waimea (outfield), Shawn Ogata-Kauai (outfield), Sam Dias-Kauai (outfield), Reichle (pitcher) and Dustin Mundon-Kapaa (utility).
Reichle was also selected to the All-state first team as a utility player while Neuberger, Yates and Oketani were named as honorable mentions to that list.
Waimea’s Letisha Pancho was named to the All-state cheerleading second team while Pancho’s teammates Jasmine Quibilian, Lorrie Otto, Kelseyanne Sagucio, Natasha Acosta and Linsey Cacagdan were named honorable mentions.
The KIF girls basketball All-star team will be in a future Garden Island issue.
