Kapa‘a Middle School officially had the longest summer vacation of any East Side public school students, as they start classes Aug. 1.
Kapa‘a Elementary and High Schools opened Friday, July 25 for all grades, and Kilauea School started classes Monday. Kapa‘a Middle School’s grade-level orientation sessions started Tuesday and end today.
The East Kaua‘i Complex is made up of schools that “feed” into Kapa‘a High School, and follows what’s called a modified, or year-round, calendar, with the exception of Hanalei School. All the other public schools on the island, not including some charter schools, follow a traditional calendar with a long summer vacation from the end of May until the end of August.
The year-round schedule means that students have mini-vacations throughout the year, the first one set for sometime in October. It also means that summer vacation is two months long instead of three.
The next schools to start classes are King Kaumuali‘i Elementary, Wilcox Elementary and Hanalei School, which begin Aug. 21.
