Keep Kaua‘i pristine!
I was so pleased to see recent letters regarding our environment and infrastructure. Maybe our views are beginning to be effective! I would like to reiterate some of the concerns in the hope that our elected officials will address and solve some of these issues NOW! Please keep writing to them with your concerns. Recently, Jean-Michel Cousteau was featured in an article in TGI (7/17/03). Referring to his expeditions, he said “There is no single place where I go where I could say it has improved. We’re still using the ocean as a universal sewer, as a garbage can. The ocean is our life support system … unless we find ways to change things very quickly, the quality of our lives is going to suffer.”
With this in mind, I feel we need to clean up our rivers – work on ways to avoid pollution from boats; prevent contamination by properly servicing toilets, cesspools, and septic tanks; clean up our beaches – get a machine like some other islands to clean up; post signs to dispose of cigarette butts and trash in designated containers; protect our reefs – instruct tour guides to tell their patrons not to walk on the reefs or take anything from them. Stop development – no more time shares, condos, or resorts. No new cell phone towers. Our island is already OVERDEVELOPED! No more rental cars – in fact, send some to Maui and Honolulu.
All these things tie in together. Tread lightly – we are only here for a short time, but the damage we do now can be devastating.
Keep our island pristine !
