Gridlock in Paradise
We all know what the problem is: Too many cars, an outdated road system and a government that studies everything to death but does nothing. Here’s the three-pronged solution:
1. LIMITS (nobody likes or wants this, but it needs to be done) on number of cars rented by car rental companies and no more than 2 cars per household for residents of Kauai.
2. Immediately cut 3 roads mauka from Safeway, Foodland and Big Save shopping centers to the bypass. Cut another road from the bypass to the Wailua Houselots. Next, build another road from Hanama‘ulu along the existing roadbed at base of hill all the way to the upper homesteads. Hire ex-cane workers and use cane company equipment if the county can’t handle it. Quit talking about it and just do it!
3. (this one is a personal fantasy!) Restore the steam railroads from Kilauea and Koloa into Lihu‘e. Use old existing railroad easements and railbeds. Steam from biomass grown on Kauai would set a good example. Both commuters and tourists would ride it and love it. (I emailed Steve Case with this idea but got no response!)
One last thought: Why is there never any talk of making alcohol from cane for a fuel additive. Seems we have the land and expertise to grow our own fuel. Brasil already has taught us how. Why aren’t we doing it?
