A week of atonement is being held this week that includes fasting and introspection, culminating with a service Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Po‘ipu Beach Park, and on Sunday evening at St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e.
The blowing of a shofar, or ram’s horn, symbolizes to the Jewish people the call to awaken and to return to God on Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah also celebrates a new year in terms of new life.
The period of atonement, prayer, and repentance ends a week from today, on a day called Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, with a fast breaking service at sundown.
