Silver City, N.M. — Sophomore All-Americans Yu Chuan Weng and Chun Yi Lin combined for 37 kills to lead the Brigham Young University – Hawai‘i women’s volleyball team to a 30 – 19, 29 – 31, 30 – 15, 30 – 23 win over Western New Mexico in Silver City Saturday in a non-conference match.
The Seasiders, ranked No. 2, improved to 7 – 2 for the season, as Weng pounded 29 kills and hit .348 for the match while Lin hammered 17 kills with no hitting errors for a .630 percentage.
Freshman libero Federica Tonon, playing her second match for the Seasiders, piled up 29 digs, the third-highest total in BYU – Hawai‘i history, leading a defensive performance that produced 130 digs and limited the Lady ‘Stangs to a paltry .046 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Silvia Oliveira, also playing her second match for BYU – Hawai‘i, pounded 27 digs that put her into the Seasider record book in a tie for eighth place. Freshman Lesina Funaki chipped in 23 digs while junior setter Kaala Lo had 22 and Weng added 15.
Lo also put up 65 assists, now tied for ninth place. It is the third time this season Lo has recorded 65 or more assists in a match. Lin and Lo both served two aces. Lin led the Seasiders with five blocks.
Senior Ashley Moeai knocked down 15 assists for the Seasiders, and Oliveira hit 13. The team hit .281.
Kim Tano led the Lady ‘Stangs with 12 kills and Liz Narkon hit double figures with 11. Tano, with 18 digs, also led Western New Mexico, who fell to 8 – 7 overall. The Lady ‘Stangs had 104 digs in the matchup and had six players in double figures in digs for the nights.
BYU – Hawai‘i meets Montana State at Billings for a conference matchup tonight, and a non-conference match Tuesday.
