New zoning, development, improvements and construction will be the topics of discussion on Tuesday at the Poipu Beach Resort Association (PBRA) Pau Hana membership meeting at “Joe’s On The Green” from 4:30-6 p.m.
Kukui‘Ula Development, LLC, the Kiahuna Golf Course and Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club will be updating the PBRA members on their respective plans during the gathering.
In other business news, Nextel puts tower plans on hold.
The Nextel company has withdrawn their application before the Kaua‘i County Planning Commission for placing a 40-foot cellular antenna tower near the Kukuiula Store.
The intention of Nextel is to research a site that would have “broader public acceptance” while providing improved service. The company is looking for a variety of locations on the South Shore.
Hyatt construction ahead of schedule
Hyatt’s new roof will be completed two months ahead of schedule, according to Claire Morris, public relations director at Hyatt Regency Kauai. In addition, ANARA spa’s full renovation is set to wrap up in early September, six weeks ahead of plans. Hyatt’s room renovations are scheduled for completion on time, which will be by the end of the year.
Visitor Statistics
With many South Shore businesses announcing historic months, the state is reporting an increase in domestic arrivals on Kaua‘i for July.
Up by 21 percent over July 2002, total domestic arrivals came in at 88,938 passengers.
The domestic market also stayed longer, averaging 7.45 days, a 3 percent increase over 2002.
The International market, however, was off by -38 percent. As a result of the International decrease, Kaua‘i’s total arrivals from July were down -2.4 percent. In all other cases across the islands, the domestic market was up while the International market significantly decreased.
Visitors to Kaua‘i from the U.S. West increased 3.8 percent in July, with an average length of stay of 8.14 days (an increase of 1.5 percent).
Those from the U.S. East also increased by 3.3 percent. Their length of stay was up 4.9 percent from 6.34 days in July of 2002.
Japanese arrivals declined by 55.4 percent but their length of stay lengthened to 3.5 days (a 73 percent increase).
“Outlook for Kaua‘i economy”
The keynote address by Dr. Leroy Laney at the upcoming Chamber of Commerce Quarterly dinner in Po‘ipu will be “The Outlook for the Kaua‘i economy.”
The event takes place on Sept. 22 at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. The cost to attend the gathering is $39 for Chamber members before Sept. 15 and $49 for non-members. The student cost is $30. For more information, call 245-6373.
Airline news
American Airlines will no longer be operating their morning flight from Los Angeles to Lihue, however the late afternoon flight will remain on the schedule. Aloha Airlines is also stopping their Oakland-Lihue service, having only implemented it as a seasonal schedule.
