LIHU‘E — The margin was just two points as the Kapa‘a Warrior wahine surprised the Kaua‘i Red Raider ladies in three games Saturday night at the Raiderdome, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24.
“They were always close,” Ed Nakaya, one of the parents in the audience said as the Warrior wahine erupted in jubilation following the win that came as Joliann Arzadon aced her serve for the 26th point in the third game.
Earlier, an Amniesty Ragsac gave Kapa‘a the sideout that sent Arzadon into the server’s box.
Ragsac, despite being a 10th grader, demonstrated her court leadership, doing what needed to be done as she got help from Jennifer Lindsey and Poerava Gantt, with strong play from back row specialists Arzadon, Roxanne Apana, and Samdi Makepa.
Errors plagued the Raiders who didn’t take the lead in the opening frame until late in the game as a Jodi Miyashiro ace deadlocked the contest at 23-23 followed by back-to-back Warrior errors that gave that game to Kaua‘i 25-23.
In the final game, Kaua‘i sloshed through more errors, and tied the game at 24-all when Anna Quibilan pushed the ball over the left-middle only to be victimized by the Ragsac kill for the sideout and eventual loss.
Earlier, the Kaua‘i boys opened with three aces by Rikki Garma and the hard hitting of Futi Tavana and Kevin Downing to take the Warrior men 25-21, 21-25, 25-18.
Kapa‘a got power hitting from the team of Ryan Cram and Billy Toy with strong support from Kiah Imai, Alika Woodward, and the setting of Koa Yama.
The JV contests were split as the Kaua‘i High School JV women took Kapa‘a in two, 25-10, 25-20.
Kapa‘a got the upper hand over the Kaua‘i JV boys 25-15, 25-13 in the afternoon bouts.
Kapa‘a will be hosting the Waimea Menehune on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
JV games start no earlier than 3 and 4:25 p.m. while varsity games begin no earlier than 5:30 and 6:45 p.m.
