Kaua‘i Police Department officials received a surprising phone call from the mother of one of the suspects arrested in the dawn drug bust in the Kawailehua Housing Project in Koloa on Thursday, said county officials.
The mother of one of the women arrested called to say “thank you,” said Cindy Mei Ozaki, county public information officer. According to Ozaki, the woman thanked police for removing her grandchildren from her daughter and placing them into her care, and forcing her daughter to look at her drug problem. The grandmother had no idea how to alleviate the situation, and said police did it for her.
In yesterday’s report about the Kaua‘i Police Department’s early morning drug bust in Koloa, the site of the bust was mistakenly referred to as the county’s Pa‘anau affordable rental-housing apartment complex. Actually, the bust involved three apartments at the Kawailehua Housing Project, which is a state affordable-rental project. The two complexes are located across Pa‘anau Road from each other.
Ozaki said the KPD won’t be immediately releasing the names of the suspects in the bust, nor the amount of drugs seized, with an ongoing investigation under way.
Mayor Bryan Baptiste returned earlier this week from a statewide anti-drug conference led by Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona.
