Kekoa Crowell threw for three touchdowns and Weston Victorino rushed for 108 yards and a score in leading the Kaua‘i football team to a 26-12 win over Waimea at Vidinha Stadium on Friday night.
The loss was the Menehunes’ first KIF regular-season setback in seven years.
Crowell (17-of-32) finished with 263 yards passing and the Kaua‘i defense forced two key interceptions in the second half of action in improving to 2-0 in the KIF. Waimea, which played without star running back Jordon Dizon, was held to 81 yards on the ground.
The Red Raiders had their way for most of the first half as they totaled 296 yards of total offense. Waimea (1-1 in the KIF) was held to 115 yards on offense through the first 24 minutes of action.
Kaua‘i opened the scoring in the first quarter as Crowell and Victorino moved the Red Raiders’ attack down field. Crowell found Victorino for a 3-yard scoring strike to give the Red Raiders a 7-0 edge with 1:27 left in the first period.
Kaua‘i jumped on the scoreboard at the opening of the second quarter as Victorino rushed in from 10 yards out for a touchdown at the 10:11 mark to give the host squad a 14-0 edge.
The Menehunes came right back to close the gap to 14-6 as Po‘okela Chang-Wo, who rushed for 43 yards on 15 carries in the first half, scampered in for a score from 7 yards out at the 7:01 mark. Chang-Wo finished with 81 yards on the ground.
Kaua‘i marched for a score on its next possession to pull ahead 20-6 as Crowell (11-of-18 for 193 yards in the first half) found Justin Arakaki for a 22-yard touchdown pass.
Crowell’s only big mistake of the first half came late in the second period when he tossed an interception that was returned for a 17-yard touchdown by Waimea’s Gary Mata to bring the Menehunes to within 20-12 at halftime.
At the start of the final period, Waimea’s Jon Palacio (104 yards passing) threw an interception which set up Kaua‘i in great field position.
The Red Raiders took advantage and opened a 14-point lead as Crowell fired his third scoring pass of the contest, a 30-yard strike to Kevin Cadiente.
The Red Raiders host Kapa‘a on Friday night at Vidinha Stadium. The JV contest starts at 5 p.m.
