PUHI — A red felt marker circle adorned the knee of Kaua‘i High School runner Shauna Tachibana who was preparing to take on the two-mile Girls cross country course Saturday as the KIF cross country season got under way.
Tachibana, who was troubled by knee surgery in the 2002 season was one of the favored runners, her knee problems hopefully behind her.
The boys’ favored runner, Mario Rosa of Island School was already warming up in preparation for his race in the Boys’ three-mile course that this year provided near-perfect spectator viewing as it wound through the campus of Kaua‘i Community College.
From Waimea High School, the Martin triplets were anticipated to put pressure on the leaders, and spectators were not disappointed as Nathan Martin took an early lead in the boys race, hounded by Kaua‘i’s Ross Brandeburg and Rosa with Scott Martin rounding out the leading group.
“They’re running fast,” a spectator noted as the leaders crossed the two-thirds mark with 12-minute times. “That’s a six-minute mile!”
Nathan’s lead dwindled as Scott broke the tape followed by Rosa, Brandeburg, and Nathan Martin.
In the girls’ race, Rachel Martin hounded Tachibana’s footseps throughout the course, and an anticipated sprint at the finish never occurred as Tachibana easily took the girls race followed by Martin, and Kristy Nagahisa of Kapa‘a High School, the Warrior runner keeping pace with the leaders throughout the course.
Kaua‘i took the girls event with 26 points, and the boys event with 32 points in the meet.
Saturday’s quad meet will move to Waimea High School, starting at 3 p.m. due to SAT testing. This date is a change from the KIF schedule.
