After 11 seasons at the top of the KIF, the Waimea football team’s reign came to an end on Friday as the Kaua‘i Red Raiders improved to 5-0 in the conference with an impressive 28-0 win over Kapa‘a at Vidinha Stadium on Homecoming night for the Warriors.
With the victory, Kaua‘i claimed the overall KIF title.
The Red Raiders looked strong from the start after dealing the Warriors (0-5 in the KIF) the knockout punch in the first quarter.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of action and outgained Kapa‘a 136-29 with eight first downs compared to one for the Warriors.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 7-0 edge on their first possession as Weston Victorino rumbled in for a 52-yard scoring run on Kaua‘i’s fourth play on offense.
The Warriors turned the ball over on their next drive on a Kai Lopez interception and the Red Raiders again moved methodically closer to the endzone.
The drive culminated in Victorino’s 2-yard touchdown run.
Late in the first quarter, the Red Raiders added to their lead when Garen Itamura hauled in a 17-yard scoring strike from Kekoa Crowell, who started the game after missing his last contest.
The Warriors finished with 72 yards of offense in the first half, 40 of which came on two Kalima Leong scrambles for first downs. For the game, the Warriors turned the ball over five times including four interceptions.
The Red Raiders finished the scoring in the first half when Crowell and Victorino marched Kaua‘i down field with under three minutes left in the second quarter.
When the first half was complete, the Red Raiders had 258 yards of total offense with Crowell hitting on 9-of-21 passes for 128 yards and Victorino rushing 14 times for 131 yards.
Kapa‘a was also hurt by six penalties for 65 yards including a few personal foul calls.
