The Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association wrapped up a busy weekend that was enhanced by a special exhibition game between the Kaua‘i Cowboys and the Hawaiian Warriors from O‘ahu Saturday night at Hanapepe Stadium.
This special fund-raiser by the semi-pro team split the Pop Warner games between Saturday’s contests at Hanapepe, and a trio of games Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
Koloa Rams 27, Kapa‘a Steelers 0
Koloa Rams’ Loren Duarte ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Koloa Peewee squad to a 27-0 shutout over the Kapa‘a Steelers in Sunday’s action at Vidinha Stadium.
Ashton Carbonel broke the scorebooks open with a 60 yard TD early in the game before Duarte went to work, reaping his 70-yard TD run in the first quarter, before loping off the 60-yarder with 2:46 remaining in the half.
Duarte’s final TD romp measured 45 yards in the second half.
Despite the shutout, Kapa‘a fielded strong presence on the field as the Steelers got nice running from Sean-Michael Shigematsu, Kaimana Stevens, Grayson Gonsalves and Devan Chong, but could not cross the end zone.
Kapa‘a Junior Warriors JPW 0, Koloa Packers JPW 25
Mikey Blackstad opened the scorebooks for Koloa followed by Kylee Rapacon hoofing 73 yards for another touchdown as the Packers blanked the Kapa‘a Junior Warriors 25-0 on Sunday.
Cameron Twiggs iced the victory with a fourth quarter TD.
Kapa‘a kept pace with the action headed by hard running by B.J. Aiwohi and Keanu Estenzo, and the Junior Warriors got nice defensive play from Dalton Thronas, Earl Thronas and Weston Moniz.
Kapa‘a Vikings 6, Koloa Midgets 6
Duke Dasalia’s two-yard run to paydirt in the first quarter opened the Midget skirmish in Sunday’s final game that saw a defensive slugfest through the remainder of the game until the Vikings hit paydirt on a pass play in the final quarter of play for the tie.
Northshore Na Ali‘i 0, Hanapepe Colts JPW 19
Darren Taylor, Rajan Baliaris and Trenton Camat led the running game of the Northshore Na Ali‘i, but the team based in Anahola was plagued by fumbles and turnovers sparked by the defensive efforts of Hanapepe Colts’ Norman Soloman and Richard Kaui.
Micah Rita sparked the Colts’ running game along with Meko Rita with Clifton Callejo adding to the TD totals.
Harry Waahila, Jae Delos Reyes and Toeery Santiago headlined the Colts’ defense.
Kekaha Panthers JPW 12, Lihu‘e Patriots JPW 0
Jaymon Resquer-Yorkman sparked the Panthers’ running along with Kele Hanohano and Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza with Alika Emayo and Perreira-Alquiza scoring for the 12-0 win over Lihu‘e Saturday.
Lihu‘e attempted to put some numbers on the board led by QB Austin Oshiro and the running of Tarren Tani, but their drive sputtered at the end zone.
Travis Koga led the Lihu‘e defensive attack along with Canaan Higa and Henry Rodriguez.
Kekaha Seahawks 0, Lihu‘e Patriots PW 6
Paleku Yasay took advantage of a scoring window that closed to a defensive struggle in their 6-0 win over the Seahawks.
The Seahawks drove to within 20 yards of the goal only to run into a toughened Patriot line who kept Kekaha’s Max Agor in check for most of the game.
Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo also fueled the long Kekaha drives.
Kekaha Chargers 12, Lihu‘e Patriots Midgets 34
Lihu‘e Patriots’ QB Andrew Renaud found Pono Matthews three times, and Lucky Andres ran two TD’s as Lihu‘e outdistanced Kekaha 34-12 in the Midget finale Saturday.
Wesley Schmidt opened the scorebooks for Kekaha on a 19-yard scamper only to have Lihu‘e answer with the first of three Renaud-Matthews connection, this one tying the contest on 18 yards.
Andres followed with a 36-yard run to paydirt with Brendon Young adding the point-after.
Renaud took to the airways again, hitting Matthews for a 41-yard score, and another 18-yarder before Andres iced the win with a 45-yard scoot.
Kekaha managed one more score before the clock ran out.
This week, Saturday’s games will be played at Vidinha Stadium. Koloa hosts Hanapepe in the morning games. Kapa‘a hosts Lihu‘e in the afternoon. The midday break will see Kekaha Panthers tangling with the Northshore Na Ali‘i JPW squad.
Games begin at 8 a.m. with the final game starting 8 p.m. Sunday, cheer squads from all the associations will gather at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea for the Annual Cheer/Spirit Competition starting at 1 p.m. The public is invited to any of these events.
