The Lihue Gateway Advisory Committee and the Kauai Outdoor Circle are asking residents, community groups and business folks to participate in the cleanup of Ahukini Road and Kapule Highway from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 25.
The “Lihue Gateway Project Community Cleanup” is being staged in line with the “Make a Difference Day,” which will be celebrated nationwide on Oct. 25 as a way for people to participate in projects that will help make their communities better.
The Kaua‘i Gateway project has been maintained mostly with volunteers for the past 1 1/2 years.
The planned Oct. 25 project is intended to show strong public support for the Gateway project, and will provide a uniform look for the cleanup area.
The Gateway project was the brainchild of former Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, who felt the beautification of the roadways leading to the Lihu‘e Airport would benefit residents and visitors alike.
A plan calls for the eventual transfer of maintenance responsibilities of the project to the state Department of Transportation.
