After a significant increase in the number of break-ins of vehicles occurring around the Kukui Grove Center and other island shopping areas, Kaua’i Police Department officers are reminding the public to take proper precautions when parking in shopping-center parking lots.
In a recent week, KPD received between 10 and 12 reports of break-ins of vehicles parked at Kukui Grove Center.
According to KPD officials, those breaking into vehicles will take anything, from CDs to pairs of used shoes. Increased break-ins are also occurring at Wal-Mart and Kapa‘a shopping areas.
There is the possibility that with the holiday shopping season fast-approaching, car break-ins could become more frequent, KPD officials warned.
KPD officials are asking shoppers to be a little more cautious while shopping.
They recommend:
- Always lock your doors;
- Do not leave valuables in your car;
- If you must leave things in your car, put them in your trunk;
- Be alert. Try to make sure no one is watching you.
Anyone with questions about parking safety should contact KPD Lt. Regina Ventura at 241-1680.
