Aloha, Kaua‘i residents
Does anyone know what is happening to our Garden Island? “One of the most beautiful places on Earth”.
Why are we continuously losing our public access to our public beaches?, And why are we now having such extreme land loss, and rapid development?
What’s up with our elected Government people? What’s up with the Military on the west side, a.k.a. (P.M.R.F.), or the Pacific Missile Range Facility?, And what’s up with the big time developers?, who all put together in a nutshell, are responsible for our drastically changing our Island Paradise.
All of these organizations, corporations, and people deserve the credit for rapid public land loss, beach access loss, and most important, “Our Quality of Life!” Just think, all future generations of family, friends, and tourists will now have a totally different island of Kaua‘i to visit and possibly enjoy. The Aloha and Mahalos have already seen significant changes here, and not for the better. The situation we are now facing is not only frustrating to many residents, but will be the start, or maybe we should say it has already started to be possibly the worst disaster to happen to our Beautiful Island for many years to come.
Don’t get me wrong, we still have many beautiful beaches, parks, and some open space for all residents and tourists to enjoy. But things are changing fast! Too fast for such a small slow paced Hawaiian lifestyle – we are so well known for worldwide!
A few facts to back up what I am writing about:
1. The P.M.R.F. and the Navy is now requesting 6000 acres be put aside as a so called passive buffer zone on the Westside surrounding the base and covers all land around the Polihale State public beach, which includes the only road to access the Polihale State beach. What exactly are there specific intentions for this land?
2. On the south shore Po‘ipu beach area we are soon to have the Kukui‘ula development with intentions to build approximately 1313 residential units on R-4 land, 123 timeshare units located on 102 acres, 64 hotel units, and 60 affordable housing units near the Paanau affordable housing unit. What will the impacts from this be? More traffic, water pollution, and air pollution.
There are many more developments in the works all around the island, in fact there is not enough paper to list them all.
One good idea for all people above mentioned, is to stop at the red lights when they turn red.
To me it seems our land loss, and our beach access loss only has green lights, and no yellow or red lights are even on the horizon.
What can we all do? To learn about what’s going on, stand up for our rights, and help the problem, All residents please come to a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 13th at 5:30 p.m. at Kalaheo School, to voice our opinions! And find out what is going on. Now is the time to make a difference, if you care about the quality of life on Kaua‘i!
