LIHU’E — The Kaua’i High School Red Raiders opened the 2003 KIF soccer season with their varsity squads sweeping host Kapa’a in hard-fought defensive contests Saturday night, the boys nudging past the Warriors 1-0 and the girls taking a 3-1 victory.
Kapa’a’s defensive showing was blemished by the sole score of the contest as Justin Kashiwabara slammed on into the goal at the 36-minute mark of the first half breaking a hotly-contested defensive contest as both squads tried to score.
Emma Makepa-Foley scored two goals for Kaua’i Red Raider girls to lead them to a 3-1 showing that came after the Red Raiders settled down in the second half to capitalize on Kapa’a goalie Nicole Kunioka-Volz who, despite the goals, demonstrated several outstanding saves during her tenure.
Makepa-Foley broke open the 0-0 deadlock at the 37-minute mark with a header from a corner kick to open the scorebooks.
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Kapa’a answered as their striker notched a goal through traffic up the middle, knotting the contest at 1-1.
Makepa-Foley came back at the 16-minute mark of the second half for her second goal, this time notching the goal on a rebound effort.
Madison Perry added the insurance goal less than two minutes later, repeating the header from a Holly Iloreta corner kick.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Kaua’i junior varsity squads saw the girls taking a 4-0 win over the junior Warriors while the JV boys finished with a 3-3 tie.
Kristen Shim led the JV Raider girls with two goals that came in the first half with Auika Muragin and Jacey Ageno adding goals in the second half.
Frank Speetgens had two goals for the Kaua’i JV boys, but the effort fell short as Kapa’a struck first, Asiss rupert and Gabe Roessler giving Kapa’a the 2-0 nod before Speetgens answered for the 2-1 Kapa’a half time lead.
Speetgens opened the third quarter scoring only to have Daniel Rodrick answer for Kapa’a for the 3-2 advantage only to have Mikiala Cup Choy lock things up for the 3-3 tie.
Kapa’a will travel to Hanapepe Stadium on Thursday for the next KIF matchup against Waimea with the first varsity contest starting at 5 p.m.
