The Garden Island and Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua’i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa’a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Dottie’s family would love a holiday dinner
Dottie and her family came off the beach at Hanama’ulu. Mom works and takes care of her children, making the best use of the resources and food stamps. Living on the beach, she has learned to minimize the use of electricity, and most of her meals are served cold. A nice hot ham or turkey dinner and all the fixings would be a nice surprise for the children. School supplies and new clothes for the children would also be appreciated.
Cookware is couple’s Christmas wish
Natasha and Norman moved to Kaua’i in July from the Philippines in hopes of making a new life for themselves in Hawai’i. Both of them are fully employed, but it is still hard to really get on their feet. To make their holiday season bright, they would appreciate new kitchenware such as pots, pans, or utensils, so they can cook meals together. They really enjoy cooking, and new kitchenware would make the season perfect.
Christmas dinner is Alex’s request
Alex is an immigrant fro the Philippines who has been living on Kaua’i for over 30 years. He is usually the provider for his family, but has recently become unemployed. His wife, Rose, is also looking for employment. To make their holidays brighter, Alex would really appreciate food items to feed his family a wonderful meal, especially on Christmas Eve.
Family copes with several problems
David was born at full term to a mom with cognitive challenges and a dad with a genetic condition. The third of four children, David was examined for the same genetic condition that his dad has (confirmed) and at the same time he was diagnosed with cancer which has metastasized to his chest and brain. Many agencies are helping the family. Dad works sporadically, mom is a full-time mom, and finances appear to be very tight. His older sibling, Harold, also received services from Easter Seals for behavior concerns. Gift certificates would be welcome.
