An unidentified visitor, apparently getting into trouble in strong currents near the western end of Po’ipu Beach Park yesterday, had to be attended to by county lifeguards and firefighters, and responders aboard an American Medical Response ambulance.
Acquaintances or fellow snorkelers brought the man to shore, where lifeguards, firefighters and AMR personnel checked him out.
According to county officials and information heard on the scanner, the man apparently swallowed a lot of sea water while snorkeling, and panicked.
He was treated on the beach, and although both AMR personnel and Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency-room doctors advised the man to accept transport to the hospital for evaluation, he refused.
The incident occurred around noon Tuesday.
